In a neutral room designed for relaxation and comfort, the subtle, warm natural colours of hardwood furniture work really well. If you like the vibrancy and character that a lively grain offers you can use Oak, or Burr Elm. If you want the look more muted then Sycamore is a beautiful, and much underused, wood.

A chunky hardwood mantel can be easily created – and that makes it pretty cost-effective, it's really just a big lump of lovely wood.
