What to do with that space in the corner? Yet another plant? A hardwood chair can be beautiful enough to stand on it’s own in a room as a distinct individual piece of furniture. And you might even sit on it occasionally, which is why it must be called and occasional chair, I suppose. You can also go a bit mad design-wise when you're making an individual chair. Whereas 6 of them would look ridiculous, a zany chair on it's own can look great.

The traditionalists out there might well be surprised just how popular it is to have benches around the dining room table. Benches can often made created in very similar styles to the table itself, where chairs cannot. And it's certainly a cheaper option to go for benches rather than a number of individual chairs. Quite a popular option is to have benches running along the long sides, and have a chair for mum and dad at the head and foot of the table.
